Table Top Protectors

To avoid this you may want to use two layers of protection, first wrap your silverware in a napkin and second put it on top of your placemat, so your guests are more likely to put your silverware back on the placemats when they set pieces down.
Napkin Rings - While you may think napkins are really soft and could not do damage, if you use napkin rings, they can cause problems including scratching and nicking your glass table top. You need to protect your table from those napkin rings by placing the whole setup on the placemat to keep the hard pieces from connecting with your glass.
Service Pieces and Utensils - When you put down those serving pieces and utensils in the middle of the table, have you considered that they may be what causes scratches in glass dining tables? You need to protect your table from all of your serving items. Either use a placemat or pad beneath them or come up with another way to protect your table from the possible scratches of those serving dishes being picked up, set down, and slid around the table.
Centerpieces - Centerpieces can be so beautiful, but also can be very damaging and may be what causes scratches in glass dining tables. Take a closer look at your centerpieces before you put them down and see if the bottom of them may be causing a problem.
